Background of the study:
Nollywood, Nigeria’s dynamic film industry, has become a major cultural force influencing local expressions in Enugu East. Through its vivid portrayal of social realities, indigenous narratives, and modern dilemmas, Nollywood films have contributed to reshaping local cultural expressions (Chinwe, 2023). The cinematic narratives not only reflect traditional customs but also introduce new forms of artistic expression, thereby mediating between global influences and local identities. As local audiences increasingly consume Nollywood productions, there is a growing need to understand how these films impact cultural values, language use, and traditional storytelling methods (Uche, 2024). The interplay between popular media and local traditions offers a rich area for research, highlighting both the preservation and transformation of indigenous culture in a modern cinematic era.

Statement of the problem:
The rapid rise of Nollywood has altered local cultural expressions in Enugu East by blending traditional motifs with modern cinematic techniques. This influence may lead to the dilution of indigenous art forms and cultural narratives, causing tension between tradition and modernity. The study investigates how Nollywood shapes local cultural expressions and whether this impact is beneficial or detrimental to cultural preservation (Chinwe, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess Nollywood’s influence on local cultural expressions.

  2. To determine changes in traditional narrative practices due to film media.

  3. To provide recommendations for balancing modern cinematic influence with indigenous culture.

Research questions:

  1. How does Nollywood influence local cultural expressions in Enugu East?

  2. What aspects of traditional culture are most affected by Nollywood?

  3. What measures can be taken to preserve indigenous cultural expressions?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nollywood significantly impacts the way local culture is expressed.

  2. Traditional narrative practices are being reshaped by cinematic influences.

  3. Cultural policies can mitigate adverse effects while enhancing positive influences.

Significance of the study:
This research elucidates Nollywood’s dual role in both promoting and transforming local cultural expressions, providing critical insights for cultural policymakers, filmmakers, and educators in Enugu East (Chinwe, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the influence of Nollywood on local cultural expressions within Enugu East Local Government only, without exploring other media forms or regions.

Definitions of terms:
Nollywood: Nigeria’s film industry renowned for its unique narrative style.
Cultural Expressions: Manifestations of local traditions, arts, and customs.
Narrative Practices: Methods of storytelling and cultural transmission.
